Why we want to protect nature!

The environmental agency’s main task is to conserve and inform about biological diversity. In Sweden we can protect valuable nature by creating national parks, nature reserves, as well as nature-, biotope- or animal protection areas.

These protected areas enable us to preserve and develop environments of special value for animals, plants and the people. These habitats are part of our natural and cultural heritage that we wish to save and pass on to coming generations. They allow us the opportunity to study and learn more about nature. Moreover, nature reserves and other protected areas enable us all to enjoy the freedom of being active in wonderful natural surroundings, whilst enjoying fresh air and renewed energy. Welcome out in nature!

National parks

National parks are owned by the Swedish state and have the highest status of all nature protection areas. At present there are 28 Swedish national parks. The Swedish National Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for proposing which areas should be designated as national parks and then for their upkeep. Gotska Sandön is Gotland’s only national park, and the most isolated island in the Baltic Sea.
